Think You Can’t Sing? Think Again!

Updated: Feb 25, 2021

Please allow me to briefly describe what happens when I meet people who think they can’t sing….

They will say, “Oh I can’t sing, I’ve never been able to”, to which I reply, “Well I believe you’re wrong as I’ve taught hundreds of people to sing who felt the same way at the start”.

I might as well have said nothing!

Then they will say, “No, Ali, I REALLY REALLY can’t sing!”. This shows me just how deep the BELIEF has grown, usually over many years. It’s no doubt been confirmed and ingrained by OTHER PEOPLE’s reaction when ‘non-singers’ try to sing, in one, or more of these damaging, negative ways by:

  • covering their ears

  • laughing

  • being told as a child to leave choir/stand at the back/or mime!

  • making negative comments

  • running from the room!

  • singing over us

  • asking us to stop

  • telling others, in front of us, what bad singers we are…

…and the list goes on!

We are usually told this in our sensitive formative years – anywhere up to the age of around 14.

It’s unsurprising then that we grow up to believe this, as every time we attempt to sing, we have to deal with such a negative reaction.

If you couldn’t sing in tune as a child it’s ONLY because you needed more time to LISTEN and LEARN how to pitch, about which so many teachers and parents are in total ignorance.

So you have been reacting to just a BELIEF all these years.

A belief, is just a THOUGHT THAT WE HAVE BEEN THINKING A LOT, which is then compounded by others, time and time again.

So – time to change your thinking! This might seem hard, but you can do this in seconds, or minutes. You won’t be able to do it without a truckload of COURAGE.

People who joined the Rooterz years ago had to walk into a rehearsal space and trust that they wouldn’t be exposed. Boy – did THAT take courage. They learnt very quickly that they would never be exposed (the backing track was too loud!) and once they’d taken that big step, the rest just flowed to them as each week they ALL improved dramatically.

Currently we’re having to run our sessions online of course. This is the PERFECT setting for you to learn: in the privacy of your own home/ car/ garden/park. Away from ANY negative comments.

On Zoom everyone’s mic has to be turned off, so you can only hear my backing track, with the harmonies, and me teaching over the top. So you’re in compete safety. If you share your home with others and you’re concerned about their comments, please check out the PACT, designed specifically for the purpose of allowing you to hit the track running.

Starting to sing again feels very scary for deep-seated reasons – it can feel like a very exposing thing to be doing.

The very last thing you need is even the slightest negative comment from anyone. So please give yourself a fighting chance by ensuring you have a private place, OR total and genuine support from those around you.

Please give yourself the chance to experience the real joy that comes from singing your heart out, with confidence, either alone or even better, with plenty of others – there’s nothing quite like it!

More posts soon on all the proven scientific benefits, but for now, please believe this:

…it WILL make you feel AMAZING!
